All his life, John* had a dog.  That changed when he moved into the long-term care facility he now calls home.  So every week, he waits for Tucker.  John knows what time the mild-mannered golden retriever visits and he makes sure to be at the entrance with a hearty welcome for his four-legged friend.

Tucker and his owner Hailey are volunteers with the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program funded by your United Way. Hailey is one of 25 volunteers that take their certified therapy dogs to visit Guelph care facilities each week.

The volunteer-led program is a great example of how a local organization is using a relatively small amount of United Way funding, $1,000 annually, to make a difference in people’s lives.

“The Therapy Dog Program brings joy to people’s lives and puts smiles on their faces. It is wonderful for emotional and physical health,” says Hailey, who not only volunteers her time for the weekly visits, but also coordinates the program.

During the weekly visits, it is not uncommon to hear people greet Tucker by name, followed by lots of smiling and chatter about what a great dog he is.  Tucker brings joy and excitement to the residents who visit with him, all in exchange for some pats and a good back scratch.
