Task Force holds three community forums
Due to the recent closing of Change Now Youth Drop-In and Resource Centre by the organization’s Board of Directors, the United Way of Guelph & Wellington has created a community task force on programming for at-risk youth. The task force’s mandate includes the creation of a model of programming that will meet the needs of at-risk youth living in Guelph & Wellington County.
Upon its completion, this model for programming will be presented to both the United Way and Wellington County Social Services who are holding funds in reserve for programming that will meet the needs of at-risk youth in the community.
Roya Rabbani, Guelph resident and Executive Director of the Self Help Resource Centre in Toronto, has agreed to chair the committee. Ms. Rabbani will be joined by:
- Sheila Markle, Manager of Children's Services, Family & Children's Services of Guelph & Wellington;
- Mark Rodford, Owner of the Cornerstone and Chair of the Downtown Board of Management;
- Vern Ledeitt, former Executive Director of the Canadian Mental Health Clinic;
- June Hoffland, City Councilor;
- Janet Kauffman, past board member of the Children’s Aid Society;
- Ingrid McCrae, service provider at the Welcome In Drop-In Centre;
- Judy Sorbara, Principal of Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute; and
- Jeff Way and Alex Demeray, two youth representatives .
To assist them in this process, the committee hosted three community forums which were attended by social service providers, youth, and the members of the community at-large. Thank you to all who attended the forums and a special thank you to the youth who continue to offer their opinions and ideas which are essential to this process.
For those who were not able to attend these forums or for those who wish to add to the discussion, Roya Rabbani, chair of the task force, can be reached on Mondays from 12-1 at 519-821-0571 ext.32 or at info@unitedwayguelph.com.
Youth and community wide forums are being planned for late August and early September. |
