 Most of us living in Guelph & Wellington County are lucky enough not to have to worry about where our next meal is going to come from. It’s easy to forget that, for many in this community, hunger is a daily reality.
For several years, the United Way of Guelph & Wellington has been providing funding to the Centre Wellington Food Bank, an agency which provides free groceries and other basic supplies to individuals and families in need. In addition, this program offers individuals the opportunity to upgrade their skills through the Wellington Centre for Continuing Education.
The Wellington Advertiser recently published an anonymous Letter to the Editor written by an individual who had been helped by the food bank. Here is what she wrote:
“I have always tried to give something to the food bank; as I was walking out of the grocery store I would put something in the box but this time I was on the other end of the spectrum. Somehow we got very, very behind and all we had left to eat at home was two pieces of bread and two pieces of cheese. I am not joking; that was it. I didn't know what to do. You see, I work and my husband is disabled. I never thought you could go to the food bank if you worked, but I called to inquire and a friendly voice said, “of course, come in.” Well, I did go in and I was astounded at what they gave me. Enough to do us for one month. It was wonderful and the people there were so friendly. What I thought was going to be a very unpleasant and embarrassing experience was a very welcome experience because they actually gave us enough to eat until we could get some money to feed ourselves. So I say thank you to everyone who volunteers at the food bank, the person who makes the delicious chili, everyone who gives, and everyone who will give. You are giving to a very worthy cause that is greatly appreciated. Thank you to everyone.” |
