Too many people in Guelph and Wellington County live in poverty.

  • 1 in 10 children in our community lives below the poverty line.
  • Food bank usage increased by over 25% in 2009.
  • On any given night, over 80 emergency shelter beds are in use.

The Guelph & Wellington Task Force for Poverty Elimination, which began in 2009, is a 40-member group committed to finding new ways to eliminate poverty.  The group comprises local nonprofit organizations, social service agencies, municipal, provincial and federal government and members of the general public.  The United Way Social Planning Department has taken a lead in this initiative,

They will release their 2010 Community Plan at an open house at City Hall, Guelph, on March 2, 3:00 to 5:00 pm.  All members of the public are welcome to attend.
