Do you know an outstanding volunteer from the University of Guelph?

Nominations are now being accepted for the Dr. William Winegard Exemplary Volunteer Involvement Awards.  In their fourth year, the Winegard Awards recognize members of the university community who have devoted volunteer time and effort in Guelph and Wellington County.  Current staff, faculty and students volunteering with community organizations, including municipal boards, community fundraising, community social health and service agencies, and nonprofits, are eligible for the awards.

The awards are presented in partnership by the University of Guelph, United Way of Guelph & Wellington and the Volunteer Centre of Guelph/Wellington.

“Every year I’ve been impressed with the calibre of the nominees,” says Cathy Taylor, executive director of the Volunteer Centre.  “The contributions of the staff, students and faculty at the University of Guelph are invaluable to our community programs.”

Ken Dardano, executive director of the United Way, echoes Ms Taylor’s thoughts, adding, “The Winegard Awards give us the opportunity to recognize individuals from the University community who truly are making Guelph and Wellington County a stronger, more vibrant community.”

The awards are named in honour of University of Guelph past president, Dr. William Winegard.  Dr. Winegard came to the University of Guelph in 1964 and served as president until 1975. After retiring from academia, Winegard served as the Member of Parliament for Guelph from 1984 to 1993. He held the portfolio of Minister of State (Science and Technology) from 1989 to 1990 and of Minister for Science from 1990 to 1993.  He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1998. Dr. Winegard remains very active in the Guelph community through his volunteer involvement.

Nomination packages are available online at www.volunteerguelphwellington.on.ca or by calling the Volunteer Centre at 519-822-0912.  The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 12, 2010. The awards will be presented in a ceremony on April 1, in advance of National Volunteer Week, April 18 to April 24.
